October might be the best-kept secret on Alabama’s Gulf Coast. The summer crowds have thinned out, and the heat has broken, but Gulf Shores hasn’t lost a bit of what makes it a destination worth visiting.
The town settles into a quieter, more laid-back rhythm that’s easy to fall for. Ready to see it for yourself? Browse our Gulf Shores rentals and start planning your getaway. Whether you want a quiet condo for two or a bigger house for the whole family, there’s a rental to match your trip.
Here’s what to expect from October’s weather, events, and the best ways to spend your days in Gulf Shores.
October Weather in Gulf Shores

October marks the shift from summer heat to a milder, breezier stretch in Gulf Shores. Afternoon highs typically settle in the upper 70s, with mornings dipping into the low 60s by month’s end, and the thick humidity of August and September finally easing off.
Gulf water holds onto its summer warmth, so swimming and kayaking are still comfortable through most of the month.
Rain tends to show up in scattered bursts rather than long stretches, and clear, breezy days are more common than not. This makes October a great month for anyone who wants beach time without the midday heat.
October also falls within the Atlantic hurricane season, which runs through November 30th. Tropical activity typically tapers off this late in the season, but it’s worth keeping an eye on the forecast in the week or two before a trip.
For a bigger-picture look at the whole season, our guide to fall in Gulf Shores is worth a read.
Quick facts:
- Average high: around 78°F
- Average low: around 60°F
- Gulf water temperature: around 77°F
- Rainy days: about 5–8 over the month
- UV index: 6–7 (high; sunscreen still matters)
Best Things to Do in Gulf Shores in October

October’s cooler temperatures make it one of the more comfortable months to get outside in Gulf Shores.
Trails, piers, restaurants, and attractions that feel crowded in July open back up, and the whole town settles into a slower pace. The same goes for nearby Orange Beach, which is home to its own array of fun things to do.
Here are five of our favorite activities to get up to in Gulf Shores in October:
1. Bike or Walk the Trails at Gulf State Park
Gulf State Park turns into one of the most pleasant outdoor places in town to spend a cooler October afternoon. The Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail winds through nine distinct ecosystems, from maritime forest to coastal dune, and October’s lower humidity makes the miles pass easily.
Rent a bike near the park’s main entrance or bring your own; the paved surface suits casual riders just as well as serious cyclists. Mornings are especially quiet this time of year, so an early ride is a good way to have the trail mostly to yourself.
For a closer look at everything the park offers beyond the trail, our Gulf State Park guide covers the rest.
2. Fish the Gulf State Park Pier
The Gulf State Park Pier stretches out over the Gulf and stays busy well past summer. Flounder start moving through the area in October on their way out to deeper water, making this one of the better months of the year to try your luck fishing from the pier.
Redfish, sheepshead, and white trout round out a typical fall catch. If you’re new to angling here, our fishing guide walks through what to bring and what’s biting.
3. Spot Wildlife at Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge
Just down State Highway 180 from the beach, Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge protects some of the last undisturbed coastal habitat in Gulf Shores.
October’s migratory songbirds pass through in real numbers, and the Jeff Friend Trail‘s boardwalk makes for an easy, flat walk even for visitors who don’t think of themselves as hikers.
Bring binoculars if you have them; the refuge was established specifically to protect nesting and migratory bird habitat.
4. Meet the Animals at the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo
The Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo is a manageable, low-key stop for families looking for a break from the beach. Cooler October air makes the walk between exhibits far more comfortable than a July afternoon, especially for younger kids, and the animals themselves tend to be more active once the heat breaks.
It’s an easy half-day outing that pairs well with a morning at the beach. Read more about a visit before you go.
5. Step Into Local History at the Gulf Shores Museum
Housed in a beach cottage that predates World War II, the Gulf Shores Museum tells the town’s story through rotating exhibits and a memorable “Hurricane Hunters” display that simulates flying into the eye of a storm.
Admission is free, and the museum is wheelchair accessible. It’s a good rainy-afternoon option if an October shower rolls through during your stay.
Our Gulf Shores Museums guide covers a few other venues worth pairing with this one.

October brings some of the biggest annual gatherings on the Gulf Shores calendar, and they’re well worth building a trip around if the dates line up.
Smaller community activities and celebrations tend to fill in around the following events as October goes on. The city’s events calendar is the best place to check for anything added closer to your trip, since new dates get posted throughout the month.

What to Pack for Your October Gulf Shores Trip
October in Gulf Shores calls for a slightly different suitcase than a July trip. Think layers rather than head-to-toe summer gear.
- A few light layers for warm afternoons and cooler mornings and evenings
- A swimsuit; the Gulf stays warm enough to swim through most of the month
- A light rain jacket or packable umbrella for scattered showers
- Reef-safe sunscreen; the UV index stays high even as temperatures drop
- Comfortable shoes for the trails, the pier, and walking around town
- A light sweater or hoodie for evenings, especially later in the month
Is October a Good Time to Visit Gulf Shores?
