How to Spend Thanksgiving in Gulf Shores

The turkey is in the oven, the kids are tossing a football on the beach, and the whole family gathers on the porch to watch the sun sink into the Gulf.

A Gulf Shores Thanksgiving trades cramped dining rooms and cold weather for mild temperatures, quiet sand, and plenty of fresh seafood on the side. It’s a holiday tradition more families on the Alabama Gulf Coast are adopting every year.

Bringing everyone together is easier when there’s plenty of room to spread out. Browse our large group vacation rentals to find a Gulf Shores home with a full kitchen, a big dining table, and enough bedrooms for the whole crew to reunite in one place.

Here’s everything you need to know about spending Thanksgiving in Gulf Shores.

Weather in Gulf Shores at Thanksgiving

Two people run hand-in-hand along the beach at sunset, waves rolling in the distance.

Late November weather in Gulf Shores is mild, with daytime temperatures in the upper 60°s and cooler evenings in the 50°s. Although there’s some rain at this time of year, it tends to be light, short showers rather than downpours.

The Gulf is too chilly for most swimmers by now, so pack for beach walks and outdoor adventures rather than long days in the water.

A few holiday must-haves will make your trip easier:

  • Layers, including a light jacket or fleece for breezy evenings
  • Closed-toe shoes for trails, the pier, and Black Friday shopping
  • A favorite family recipe or two to cook in your rental’s kitchen
  • Disposable pans and serving utensils if you’re bringing a dish to the Flora-Bama potluck
  • Sunscreen and sunglasses, since the midday sun is still strong

Where to Get Your Thanksgiving Meal in Gulf Shores

No matter if you love to cook or would rather have a night off, Gulf Shores makes it easy to enjoy a traditional Thanksgiving meal. Here are your best options for this year’s feast.

Cook the Feast in Your Rental

There’s something special about preparing Thanksgiving dinner together in a spacious vacation rental kitchen, with the Gulf just outside the window.

You’ll find plenty of grocery stores in the city, many of which are just off Gulf Shores Parkway and easy to reach. Stock up in the days before Thanksgiving because some stores run limited opening hours on Thanksgiving Day itself.

If you want to skip a lot of the prep and enjoy a more relaxed Thanksgiving meal in the privacy of your vacation home, buy a pre-made holiday meal instead so that all you have to do is heat it and eat it.

Rouses Market and Publix both offer holiday catering platters, including turkey dinners and sides for Thanksgiving. Pre-order a week or two ahead of your trip, and pick it up once you get into town.

Let Someone Else Do the Cooking

If you’d rather leave the dishes behind, several local restaurants serve holiday menus on Thanksgiving Day. Reservations fill up fast, so book a table early.

  • The Hangout: A family-style, all-you-can-eat feast in a casual setting right beside the beach in Gulf Shores.
  • Sunliner Diner: Choose from a Thanksgiving prime rib special or the regular menu that’s packed with diner classics at this timeless spot in Gulf Shores.
  • Doc’s Seafood & Steak: Choose a traditional Thanksgiving Feast or classic comfort food dishes from the regular menu at this popular spot in Orange Beach, about 15 minutes from Gulf Shores.
  • Perdido Beach Resort: A traditional Thanksgiving feast served buffet-style in the resort’s grand ballroom in Orange Beach, about 20 minutes east of Gulf Shores.

Other Things to Do in Gulf Shores

Between the parades on TV and the leftovers in the fridge, there’s plenty of time to get out and explore. These activities are perfect for late November, when the weather is mild, and the crowds of summer are long gone.

For more seasonal ideas, check out our guide to Gulf Shores in November.

1. Walk Off the Feast on the Beach

Late November temperatures usually land in the upper 60°s during the day, which is ideal for a long walk on the sand. Beaches tend to be less crowded than in peak summer season, so there’s plenty of room for a family football game, a round of volleyball, or a sunset stroll after dinner.

Unless you’ve rented a beachfront home with instant sand access, the Gulf Shores Public Beach is the easiest spot for a group to gather. Bring a sweatshirt, since evenings near the water cool off quickly.

2. Explore Gulf State Park

Gulf State Park is a great way to get the whole family outside on Thanksgiving weekend. You could go for a walk or a bike ride along the Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail, which connects Gulf Shores to nearby Orange Beach.

Be sure to look out for wildlife along the boardwalks and coastal trails as you explore. Learn more in our guide to the best things to do at Gulf State Park.

3. Go Paddling

There are lots of calm stretches of water to explore by kayak or paddleboard in Gulf Shores.

You could put in at Portage Creek and head east towards Oyster Bay and Bon Secour Bay, or go west to reach the back bays of Orange Beach. Little Lagoon, just east of central Gulf Shores, is another great spot.

No matter which area you choose, you can expect to glide past marsh grasses and waterfront homes as you explore. You might even be lucky enough to spot a pod of dolphins, particularly if you head out early.

Mornings tend to be the calmest, so plan your paddle before the afternoon breeze picks up.

  4. Go Fishing at the Gulf State Park Pier

Fall is a favorite season for anglers on the Gulf Coast, and the Gulf State Park Pier is one of the best places to cast a line. Redfish, sheepshead, and Spanish mackerel are common catches this time of year.

It’s an easy outing for mixed-age groups, since anglers and spectators can enjoy the views together. See our guide to fishing the Gulf State Park Pier for more tips.

5. Tackle Your Black Friday Shopping

Black Friday on the coast means outlet deals without the big-city chaos. Here’s where to find the best holiday shopping near Gulf Shores:

  • The Wharf (Orange Beach, about 15 minutes east of Gulf Shores)
  • Tanger Outlets (Foley, about 20 minutes north of Gulf Shores)
  • OWA (Foley, about 20 minutes north of Gulf Shores)

If you’d rather stay closer to home, you’ll find some local boutiques in our guide to shopping in Gulf Shores, but they tend not to offer as many Black Friday savings as the chain and designer brands found at the shopping malls.

2026 Thanksgiving Events in Gulf Shores

Thanksgiving week on Alabama’s beaches is low-key, but a few favorite events make the long weekend extra special. Here’s what’s on the calendar for 2026.

Flora-Bama Thanksgiving Potluck

This free, come-one-come-all feast is one of the most beloved holiday traditions on the coast.

The Flora-Bama Lounge provides the turkey and ham, and guests bring a side dish to share, ideally in a disposable pan. Military members, veterans, and elderly patrons get first place in the buffet line.

This beloved bar sits right on the Alabama-Florida state line, about 25 minutes east of Gulf Shores. The potluck is free to attend, but you can expect to pay for drinks.

Coastal Half Marathon, 5K & 1 Mile Run

Work off that second slice of pie at this annual post-Thanksgiving race. Runners start in Orange Beach, about 15 minutes east of Gulf Shores, and follow the paved Backcountry Trail through Gulf State Park.

With a half marathon, a 5K, and a 1-mile fun run, there’s a distance for every member of the family.
